Dr. Ewe Hong Tat was born in Penang Island, Malaysia and did his secondary school education in Chung Ling High School, Penang. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree from University of Malaya, Malaysia, Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA and PhD degree from Multimedia University, Malaysia.
He had worked before in Intel Penang as Process Development Engineer, MIT's Research Laboratory for Electronics as Research Assistant, and University of Malaya as Lecturer, and is currently the Vice President (Academic) of Multimedia University. Over the years, he has won awards and prizes in different stages of life, including the Grand Prize of MAS-STAR Mind Competition in 1987, the Young Scientist Award of URSI (International Union of Radio Science) in 1996, the Best Speaker Award of 18th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing in 1997, and the Outstanding Young Malaysian Award - Academic Leadership and Accomplishment Category in 2005 and Gold Medals in International and National Invention Exhibitions.
In publication, he has published 2 books and over 70 international journal and conference papers and had been an IT column writer in Sin Chew Daily for four years. His research interest includes microwave remote sensing, satellite image processing and wireless sensor network. He is also currently an active researcher in the microwave remote sensing project in Antarctica and has led the team twice to
Antarctica for outdoor field measurement and site survey. These research projects are also in collaboration with international
researchers and have been funded by Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Intel, European Commission and JobStreet.com. He is also a senior member of IEEE. He has been Educational Counselor of M.I.T for nine years and is currently the regional chair in Malaysia.
He is also active in technopreneur development work and was formerly the Director for Center for Commercialization and Technopreneur Development in Multimedia University. Currently, he is an independent non-executive director of PUC Founder (MSC) Berhad, a listed company in MESDAQ, Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and has been consultant and advisor for several listed and startup companies in Malaysia. He has also been with JobStreet.com since its early days as a consultant for its job matching engine.
Apart from his academic work, he is also actively involved in other activities. Since high school time, he has been conducting classes and talks in education and science to schools and institutions. Through his articles in the media and cyberworld, he promotes the learning of ICT for public but also highlights the possible social impacts to the society in the E-era. He is currently an Educational Counselor of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Regional Chair for Malaysia. He is married with three children.
